Although schools have already re-opened and holidaymakers have returned to their normal everyday lifestyles, Wilderness is still experiencing summer in a big way. Our golden beach is happily playing host to a lot of sunseekers with the sea as beautiful as ever. So good to know that we are now entering our most beautiful time of the year...February. Days are sparkling bright and late afternoons and evenings seem perfect for long walks on the beach.

Sadly we were unable to accommodate the unplanned, last minute arrivals during the high season due to Sea Paradise Guest House running on a full-house basis. To you go our apologies, maybe a next time? To our guests that could find accommodation with us, thank you for choosing our sought-after location as your holiday destination. We already are busy planning to have all in place for your next arrival. The whales are here

At the moment we have a lot of whale sightings right in front of the guesthouse. Often they are surrounded by huge amounts of dolphins. Is this the annual "hello" gathering? I wonder.
Some early signs of spring abound. The birds are more active, the Buddhlejas are starting to to flower and spread their perfume.
Early pelargoniums are starting to flower,.....all in all a wonderful awakening of nature, especially after some good winter rains.

Wilderness is still natural enough to experience the magic of nature in life, like breakfasting alongside the whales.

So the World Cup is drawing to a close and I think one can expect feelings of living in a vacuum.

Many business travellers along the Garden Route have started to make Sea Paradise a definite business accommodation stopover,
preferring to stay here as an alternative to George accommodation.

How great it is to head back to the beach at the end of a working day, and within walking distance have a choice of 12 restaurants and some friendly bars for drinks where there most certainly will be some interesting locals.

Alternatively if fishing or cycling is your thing, the beach is on your doorstep and the gravel roads are loads of fun for mountain bikers.

Cave Dwellers on the coast

This is an interior shot of a cave just 15 minutes walk away from the guest house. Yes, you`re right, there are people living here.
This used to be a restaurant. Since the local Tchoe Tchoe train has stopped running here, this restaurant closed.
Now there are people living in the cave. They have running water and ablutions but no electricity and no way to close off!! It must get very cold here in Winter with no sunshine entering the cave and loads of moisture in the air.

Interesting and just a bit wacky. Mobiles of shells adorn the ceiling and dining room tables are set for a banquet.

A lovely walk along the railway tracks and in full view of the ocean leads to the cave.

Miles to walk

Wilderness beach must be one of the longest stretches of unspoilt beach along the Garden Route. One can walk forever.
In fact one could walk to Sedgefield, and what is really great, is that one is often completely alone in this nature paradise, just the ocean the sand, some sea gulls and Oyster Catchers and the endless blue sky.

6km inland and in the hills

Just 5 minutes drive behind Wilderness and up the Serpentine Pass lies a wonderful surprise of rural scenery complete with indigenous forested wilderness corridors and mountain backdrops.

This a always a worthwhile drive especially at the end of the day when the lighting changes and the colours mellow.
This particular shot is taken in Hoekwil an agricultural village. In the background are the Outeniqua Mountains.
If you translate this word from the original Khoisan language, it means..."land of milk and honey".

This road automatically winds its way to the old George-Knysna rd, which lies parallel to the N2.
So there are some wonderful circular driving routes.

Gateway to the Garden Route

After travelling from Cape Town and coming through the tricky Kaaimans Pass, this is the first ocean and beach view.
Stunning! This is also the village Wilderness, which is a one in a million as it is surrounded by the Wilderness National Park.
Recently the Wilderness National Park has been included in the greater Garden Route National Park, which protects all the wilderness corridors and natural habitats and stretches as far as Tsitsikamma.
In Wilderness the beachfront is protected and so are the lakes behind the dunes,the natural vegetation and afromontane forests.

Sea Paradise Guesthouse lies right on the beachfront.

Summertime.......

So now the season is on and Wilderness has that certain buzz again. Never too many people, but an accelerated activity and there are definitely holiday makers around.

The weather today is 23 degrees, yesterday was 27 and tomorrow 21. That gives a good idea of the range of Summer temperatures.
Breakfasts on the balcony, 18 degree water tempeartures and fun in the sun.

Indigenous and flowering

This spring the clivias have been flowering later than usual, usual being September. They are a magnificent example
of the striking beauty of our indigenous plants, and these plants thrive in moist shady spots and do well in suburban gardens.
It is a highly poisenous plant and has been used for magical purposes in the African tradition.
Interestingly the porcupines, who love to eat bulbs, stay well away from the clivia plants!!

Wilderness walks

Whether you are walking on the beach, in the open veld, or in the forests, the Wilderness walks are easy and well signposted.
Because they lie in protected nature zones, one may on the odd occasion come across a bushbuck, a mongoose crossing the path,
possibly even a cape clawless otter and of course francolins and guinea fowls. The rock pools are wonderful to explore, with sea urchins, star fish to see and sometimes the elusive octopus.

So a trip to Wilderness is definitely for those who need to relax and unwind and who also enjoy walking and exploring.
Of course there are also beautiful gravel country roads, which make for perfect mountain biking.

Cango caves

One of the really popular day outings from Sea Paradise is a trip to the Cango caves.
The drive is scenic as it crosses the Outeniqua Mts and meanders through the semi-desert of the Klein Karoo.

Driving just 70 km away from here and over the Outeniqua mountains lies Oudtshoorn, a charming Karoo town with many beautiful Victorian sandstone buildings.

Another 20 km further outside Oudtshoorn and you arrive at the Cango caves.

Before going in to see the caves, it is well worth seeing the video, mainly because there is footage of the recently discovered extensions of Cango; and it takes one`s breath away to see the brilliantly sparkling interiors fit for a king, like zillions of diamonds all round.

But mostly the caves are a wonderland journey. Enough said!

At the end of the day, its lovely to leave the heat of the Karoo and arrive back in Wilderness overlooking the ocean in time for a swim or sunset.

Summer Paragliding

Summer is just 2 months away and I thought I`d put in a teaser pic. Look at the intense blue sky and ocean, the expanse of space, of unspoilt beach, (no highrise buildings) and a true adventurer`s and nature lover`s destination.

One of the adventure sports, ie paragliding is something for everyone, ...and I say this because you dont have to fly alone,you can fly in tandem!! This way you sit in a harness with the tandem fundi and hey ......run off the hill and whoosh airborne and peaceful gliding. The time in the air is anything from 15 minutes to 1/2 hour and leaves you feeling invigorated and energised.

This is really fun, to soar above the beach, sometimes over the ocean and then finally land on the beach.

Ever felt like flying?

Try this for an eagles` perspective or in this case a seagulls`!

Oh, and Sea Paradise is right on the beach, pretty much in the middle of this stretch.

Some spring days here at Sea Paradise on the beach are still cool, ie 19 degrees C and so our recent guests Trish and Lilian took full advantage and found a corner in the sun in the comfortable upstairs lounge.

Welcome the Whales

The last 6 weeks have flown past and I have been meaning to announce the arrival of the southern right whales in Wilderness.
This is a yearly event and for me marks the beginning of early signs of spring. To see that immense body heave up out of the surface of the ocean is so thrilling, and then to sit back and observe them is a treat.

The thing that is most special is their pace, their p-a-c-e.. it is so slow and unhurried.
To sit and be with them, I find the daily stresses of the "busyness" of life draining off and before long find myself sighing with relief and contentment.

Another wonderful experience is to be so close to them, that one can hear the breath, for sure, one can hear it from rocky shores, when they laze close by. !! The blowhole opens and tons of air escapes slowly and evenly for what seems a long time; and that sound can transport one right into that giant barrel of peace.
Fantastic.

So the whales really offer us moments of peace and wonder, and this is food for thought.!

The real reason for their yearly trip to these waters is to calve and nurse their single offspring. At this stage in August quite a few calves would have been born and are being nurtured into healthy whales, and in January they head off back to Antarctica.

At Sea Paradise we have had whale sightings from our breakfast room. The pic I have included clearly shows two of them.
What they are up to, ....I would not know, hopefully having fun.

Magicians in the forest

This past weekend I took some friends on one of my favourite walks in the Wilderness area, the 30 minute forest walk and "BIG Tree". If you`re feeling relaxed, not overly energised and in search of a therapeutic mini journey, this one`s the one.

Just 15 minutes drive inland from the beach and onto the plateau is a large stretch of afromontane forest, and behind the forest lie the Outeniqua Mountains.
For centuries now the population of trees here have established themselves as mature forests and the elders here are generally between 500 and 600 years old.
Amongst all the magnificent trees however, there is one family that stands out, the yellowoods, and in particular the Outeniqua Yellowood.
With their long flowing old man`s beards draped loosely from branches up to 40m high, these trees exude presence and magick. Fluted crowns and expressive branches,... this truly is Tolkien`s world.

On this particular walk you shall meet our oldest resident we know of, an 800 year old giant. At this stage of his life his girth measures 12 metrs and he towers 33m above the forest floor.
As a little seedling in the early 1200s he would have started his journey in life, growing through times like the middle ages, Bartholomew Dias and Vasco ds Gama sailing past on their wooden boats, possibly observed elephant and dreaded woodcutters, a couple of Khoisan running around and in all this time of international human action, movement, development and land occupations all round, he stayed in one space occupying the same 4 square metres at the base. How centred can one be!

Is it not amazing that that there is a force that powers plants to grow, continually so and for 800 years. Wow. This is fantastic. You see this is what happens when one meets a magician of this natue. He sparks one`s imagination, and before you know it, you`re on a rollercoaster of images and dreams; and is this not how stories develop?

At this point it is time for me to let go, let you sit back and wonder and imagine your own creation story or...possibly a visit to a magical Tolkien`s world.

Just a note and a pic to show the beauty of Wilderness beach. This shot is taken from the garden at Sea Paradise guesthouse.
As you can see there is an additional hidden deck set in amongst the dune vegetation where you can feel the indigenous plants and smell the aroma all round.

Although the ocean is cold at the moment ie 14 degrees Celsius, the 6km long beach is great for walking, and there are beautiful rock formations and rock pools along this stretch.

market in the Center of the Village under the Milkwood Trees. In the complex you will find 5

Agencies. Then you also have a Art Gallery as well as a Jewely Shop and a beautiful little Perl shop

This photo was taken just before sunrise on the beach of Danie and Bella, our Whirehair
Terrier. You do not need TV during your holiday in the Wilderness..... the Beach is
the BIG SCREEN with so many activities up and down this wonderful Beach. People
walking their dogs... fisherman.. the joggers and the sunbathers and swimmers... and
the bird watchers !

Birdlife in Wilderness
The village of Wilderness is the start of the Wilderness National Park. The park stretches
from the Touw River mouth to the Swartvlei estuary near Sedgefield and is home to numerous
types of birds from forest and mountain dwellers to water birds.
There are a series of interconnecting lakes between the Touw River and Rondevlei, which host
a variety of water birds, such as the great crested and black-necked grebe, reed cormorant,
grey and purple heron, African spoonbill, little Bittern and red-knobbed coot.

The white fronted plover can also be found on the mud banks of the Touw River, adjacent to
Ebb and Flow restcamp.

The surrounding forested hillside is home to several raptors, including; cuckoo hawk, crowned
eagle, forest buzzard, sparrow hawks and African goshawk

You may also spy the elusive Knysna Lourie or one of the many kingfisher species, such as the
malachite and giant pied kingfishers while walking along the nature trails in the unique
ecological system.

WHALES

This is our own Whales in front of our Guesthouse. So many of them have visited us during the last season. We still saw them about
two weeks ago....and can still be seen when going out with OCEAN BLUE in Plettenberg Bay
Recent singtings in the are were : Cape Fur Seal, the Humpback Whales and
the Common Dolphins as well as the Bottlenose Dolphins. Only 45min drive to Plet.
Very popular for the adventurous the Shark diving in Mosselbay.

Dead Whale

Victoria Bay only 10 min away from us and a popular surfers and swimming beach, is in the news. A dead whale was washed out on the rocks and the whole beach is under thread of pollution. Two years ago we had a similar situation with a dead whale..... and what a problem! Oil covered the whole area around the whale and the smell !!! This one was buried on the beach in front of our Guesthouse ! Whale teeth is also very valuable.... so we might start digging one of these days!

This is a paradise for Bird watchers. One of our Guests counted 40 different species just while
relaxing on the deck during the few days they stayed at C Paradys. The National Park, 10 min drive from us have opened a new Bird Hide two years ago and where all the waterbirds can be observed.

This is just part of our family ! In total Danie and myself have 7 children with their spouses =
14 children. Then we have 20 grandchildren together. What a blessing ! and the best .... All
our children are still living in South Africa. Some have studied in Switzerland, Germany, USA
UK and some have travelled a few times around the Globe but are all happy to raise their
children and to stay in this wonderful land of ours.... SOUTH AFRICA !

During our Winter holidays during the month of June and this year we went to the Kruger
National Park. This is one of my increadible photos that I took near Krokodil Bridge where 3
cheetas killed this Impala. My best photos have been send to a Photo Compitition... and
hopefully I can win a 4X4 !

WILDERNESS BEACH

A visitor that enjoyed the sun on our beach the
other day.. this Seal. He was so happy sitting on
our beach undisturbed. Many people walked
passed him and he did not even blinked an eye.
Mossel Bay is not even an hours drive from us and
you can have a boat trip from the Harbour to see
the Seals on Seal Island
We saw so many Whales just in front of our Guesthouse yesterday... this is their mating time
and you must see them perform.... !!

MOODS OF WILDERNESS BEACH

We see these fishermen daily, some fish through
the night all in the hope to get the BIG one.
Through all the years I have not seen many of
them that was very successful !
But we have experienced a very exciting catch one day when someone caught a 35kg Cob and after a few hours of struggle could finally bring it
in (man alone) Then he also had a problem getting it into his car. Model of the story....be prepared for the when luck gets your way.
We have so many exciting things happening on our lovely beach!

End of September and hopefully beginning of the Summer after a long cold winter.

Our lovely outstreched sandy Beach is one of the most wonderful

sights in the Garden Route and would like to show you in the next post all the moods of the Beach.

1. The Romantic mood.... for all our Honeymoon Couples to enjoy.

Wilderness is so popular for Honeymooners. ... for some it is their first Honeymoon, and others the second or 10th Honeymoon.....as long as it is enjoyed !

Danie and myself have seen so many Honeymoon Couples during

the 20 years. Some came back to show the first, second and sometimes the third child.

Our Honeymoon couples are spoiled with shampaigne, flowers, fruit and chocolates in their room.

Springtime in the Garden Route

This means FLOWERS & FLOWERS like most other places on earth. But what is unique
about Wilderness flowers ?

We have the Aloes that are growing wild everywhere and with its bright orange and red colours ... brightens up the dreary cold and winter days.

The Choo choo Train used to run through our small village but nowadays only the Wilderness Station is still up and running as a Restaurant. The area along the rail is covered with so many
different kinds of Aloes and so many tourists stop to take photos of this wonderful
colour display.

It is also a bird photographers dream taking the best shots of so many different birds.

During the winter months our guesthouse closes for the whole month of June and our staff

and Danie and myself go on our annual holiday. This year we went to the Kruger National

Park and last week we went to Namaqualand, that is on the West Coast of the Cape.

In my next posting I will show you my best photos of both these places.

This is my first attempt to start my own blog and hopefully it will just get better every time!

Would like to know that every person that will read my blog will enjoy the wonders of this

magnificent Garden Route.

In my next posting I will also show photos of the staff and of Danie and myself.

Between us.... we have ? (how many) grandchildren ?? Ooh my, so many, we are so blessed!
